"The PSC’s 18-month Strategic Action Plan to change the course of CUNY and win a great contract shifts gears Monday, 10/25 with a mass online and in-person rally calling on the Board of Trustees to approve the University Budget Request and the Governor and Mayor to put us on the path toward a New Deal for CUNY.

"With a new governor in office, a new mayor in the wings, and rising support for the investments the PSC and the CUNY Rising Alliance have urged, the CUNY administration has finally requested a budget worthy of our mission, and it doesn’t hike tuition. An additional $416 million (NYS: $313M | NYC: $103M) is in the ambitious request, with funding for New Deal for CUNY priorities, including 1,075 new full-time faculty lines, opportunities for full-time conversion appointments for adjuncts, and additional full-time mental health counselors."

CUNY First Computer System to Aid Administrative Control over Colleges at the Expense of Efficiency and Effectiveness

Guest Post   Every once in a while I get a question, either privately or in a department meeting, regarding CUNYFirst. Here is what I know of CUNYFirst, based on a few years of working with the project as a "training liaison" (which is a fancy term for room-scheduler). (1) The idea of CUNYFirst is a good one: to have a unified, integrated "enterprise"-scale system that encompasses all university/campus business processes. Such a system could, in principle at least, have saved a lot of expenditure on maintaining dozens of disparate, redundant, barely cooperating third-party systems. Such a system could have offered information access that would have benefited the administration, the staff, the faculty, and students. (2) CUNY Central's motives in pursuing CUNYFirst were dominated by an agenda that has nothing to do with such benefits however. Petraeus at CUNY - A Roundup

Outrage over Petraeus's appointment to the Macaulay Honors College has exploded since Gawker published the salary and employment negotiations that led to his accepting the job. To entice Petraeus to CUNY, Matthew Goldstein and Macaulay Dean Kirschner offered Petraeus either $200,000 or $150,000 to teach a single three-credit course, meeting either for one or two semesters. Petraeus has also been offered assistants to do his grading, course administration, and even research, leaving him with what is truly a three-hour/week appointment. At approximately $3,000 per course, average adjunct salaries are, unsurprisingly, considerably less than this.
